Today's ride was cool, though, because I used the imapmyride application on my iphone for the first time. Well, I've had the app for a while, but my old iphone was the original model: no gps. That eliminated a lot of the value from the app. My new iphone 4 has gps, though, so I can map my rides as I go, vice having to play around with the map online afterwords. Plus, it does cool voice-overs periodically during the ride. I set it for 5 miles. So as I rode, I listened to the Econtalk podcast, and periodically, the app played a voice-over with distance covered, average pace, etc. It also tweeted my progress. Very fun. :)
It's been a busy week. Getting back to work after the trip to Europe wasn't as painful as I thought it would be. Of course, the trip was busy, and fairly tiring, so it was almost more restful this week than last. Less unique, though. I spent a fair amount of time finishing up the final paper for my class this week. It was supposed to be a reflection on what I learned, impressions about the cultures of Austria and the Czech Republic, suggestions on how to improve the trip for future classes, that sort of thing. Referencing my previous entries made during the trip made the process easier, but it still required a number of revisions to get my thoughts properly organized. Initial feedback from the professor was positive, so I guess it turned out well. We'll see when he posts the grades; of course, I kindof have the impression that you have to try to not get an A on this one.
So that just leaves one class this fall, and the MBA's done. Woohoo! I'm definitely ready to be finished. Unfortunately, I'll still have some studying to do. The Navy requires all officers to take joint professional military education classes. Well, Congress does actually. By statute, all military officers have to qualify in joint operations, the theory being the education and qualification process will help the various services to work together. In practice, it just makes for more hoops to jump through. I have no interest whatsoever in this joint crap, but it's a requirement to have the first phase done before going to command as a commander. Now, I know for a fact that I won't be commanding a submarine, but that doesn't mean there aren't other opportunities out there. Plus, having it done, or being on the path to having it done, before the board for promotion to commander next February will probably help my promotion odds. So I'm biting the bullet and starting work on it. Ugh.
Anyway, here are a few things I wasn't able to post from my iphone while I was on the trip.
First, a couple videos I took from the bell tower of St Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna:
And here's a video panorama of Prague, taken from Wencelas' Vineyard just below the Prague Castle:
Changing of the Guard at Prague Castle:
And the World Cup from the Old Town Square in Prague:
So yeah, that was a cool trip. But no doubt that was obvious. :) More pics and stuff to follow.
